What it is made up of?

German beer mugs are of course made in Germany and have traditional look because it comes with a hinged pewter lid. It is made up of German glass or clay and mostly carved and decorated.

What Germans call them?

Since it is made up of clay or stone it is called stein but technically it is termed as Steinzeugkrug (Stoneware Jug), Bierkrug (Beer Jug) or Mass Krug (Beer mug) or just Krug (Jug).

 Why it has hinged lid?

The early steins didn’t have lids but it appeared after the Europe has been encountered with Bubonic plague in 13th century. The insects got attracted to the sweet smell of beer and infected the beer causing the reason of plague. The government has ordered that all alcoholic beverages establishments must cover their stocks to prevent the disease spread. Therefore, hinged lid appeared with the stonewares and glasswares.

Why beer steins are heavy?

To decorate the beer stein with engraving extra layer of clay is being used and the thick layer of clay is heavy in itself. Moreover, the hinged lid also adds weight to the whole mug making is a heavy item.

Does it keep beer cold for longer?

Due to its design and manufacturing material, the beer remains cold for long hours. The presence of handle doesn’t allow direct heat transfer. In addition, the thick layer of clay or glass acts as an insulator and thus keeping it cold to let you enjoy a chilled beer.
